Section 80D Health Insurance Deduction (FY 2026-27): Limits, Parents, Preventive Checkup
What you will learn
- Section 80D health insurance premium par deduction deta hai — 80C ke Rs 1.5 lakh bucket se bilkul alag aur uske upar. Isme aati hain: self, spouse, dependent children ki health policy ka premium; parents ki policy ka premium (alag limit); aur preventive health checkup ka kharcha (sub-limit ke andar).
- Basic structure: self + family (spouse, dependent children) ke liye Rs 25,000 per year; agar aap ya spouse senior citizen (60+) ho to Rs 50,000. Parents ke liye ALAG limit: non-senior parents par Rs 25,000, senior citizen parents par Rs 50,000.
- Preventive health checkup par Rs 5,000 tak ka kharcha 80D me count hota hai — lekin ye overall limit ke ANDAR hai, upar nahi. Example: self-family premium Rs 22,000 + checkup Rs 5,000 = total Rs 27,000 claim nahi hoga; cap Rs 25,000 hi rahega (checkup me se sirf Rs 3,000 count hoga).

Section 80D kya cover karta hai
Section 80D health insurance premium par deduction deta hai — 80C ke Rs 1.5 lakh bucket se bilkul alag aur uske upar. Isme aati hain: self, spouse, dependent children ki health policy ka premium; parents ki policy ka premium (alag limit); aur preventive health checkup ka kharcha (sub-limit ke andar).
Important: ye deduction old tax regime me meaningful hai — new regime me 80D generally available nahi hota. Aur premium cash me pay kiya to deduction nahi milta (preventive checkup ko chhod kar) — banking channel se payment zaroori hai. Life insurance premium 80D me nahi, 80C me aata hai.
Limits ka structure: Rs 25,000 se Rs 1 lakh tak
Basic structure: self + family (spouse, dependent children) ke liye Rs 25,000 per year; agar aap ya spouse senior citizen (60+) ho to Rs 50,000. Parents ke liye ALAG limit: non-senior parents par Rs 25,000, senior citizen parents par Rs 50,000.
Matlab maximum possible: aap senior (Rs 50,000) + senior parents (Rs 50,000) = Rs 1,00,000 total deduction. Common working-age case: self-family Rs 25,000 + senior parents Rs 50,000 = Rs 75,000. Ye limits premium + preventive checkup combined hain, alag-alag nahi.

Preventive health checkup: Rs 5,000 ka sub-limit
Preventive health checkup par Rs 5,000 tak ka kharcha 80D me count hota hai — lekin ye overall limit ke ANDAR hai, upar nahi. Example: self-family premium Rs 22,000 + checkup Rs 5,000 = total Rs 27,000 claim nahi hoga; cap Rs 25,000 hi rahega (checkup me se sirf Rs 3,000 count hoga).
Checkup ka payment cash me bhi chalega — ye 80D ka single cash-allowed component hai. Annual full-body checkup, blood tests, health screening packages isme aate hain. Receipts save karo; family members ka checkup bhi isi sub-limit me count hota hai.
Worked example: 35 saal ka professional, senior parents
Amit (35) apni aur wife ki family floater ka premium Rs 18,000 deta hai, plus Rs 4,000 ka annual checkup — self-family bucket me Rs 22,000 (cap Rs 25,000 ke andar). Apne retired parents (dono 62+) ki policy ka premium Rs 42,000 pay karta hai — parents bucket me Rs 42,000 (cap Rs 50,000 ke andar). Total 80D deduction: Rs 64,000.
30% slab me ye Rs 64,000 deduction roughly Rs 20,000 tax bachata hai (cess included). Note: parents ki policy ka premium AAP pay karo apne account se — agar parents khud pay karte hain to deduction unko milega, aapko nahi.
Senior citizen parents bina insurance ke: medical expenditure
Agar senior citizen parents ke paas koi health insurance nahi hai, to unke actual medical expenditure par Rs 50,000 tak ka deduction milta hai — same parents bucket me.
Hospital bills, medicines, treatment costs — sab receipts organize karke rakho. Ye provision kam log jaante hain aur claim karna bhool jaate hain.
80D vs new regime: kab matter karta hai
80D sirf old regime me tax bachata hai. Agar aapke total deductions (HRA + 80C + 80D + home loan interest) new regime ke advantage ko cross karte hain tabhi old regime jeetta hai. Rs 64,000 ka 80D akela regime nahi palat-ta, lekin doosre deductions ke saath combined effect decisive ho sakta hai.
Health insurance kharidne ka decision tax se drive mat karo — coverage ki zaroorat pehle hai, deduction bonus hai. Rs 5-10 lakh ka family floater + parents ki alag senior policy aaj ke hospital costs me minimum sensible coverage hai. Tax comparison Income Tax Calculator me karo.
80D claim checklist
(1) Premium receipts jisme insured members ke naam aur payment mode dikhe. (2) Payment bank/card/UPI se — cash nahi (checkup exception). (3) Parents ki policy aapke account se paid. (4) Preventive checkup receipts Rs 5,000 sub-limit ke andar. (5) Payroll declaration me 80D amount employer ko diya taaki TDS adjust ho. (6) ITR me self-family aur parents ka breakup sahi fields me.
Filing ke waqt AIS me insurer-reported data se mismatch na ho ye check karo. Sahi documentation ke saath 80D old-regime taxpayers ke liye 80C ke baad sabse easy Rs 25,000-75,000 ka deduction hai.
