Advance Tax in India (2026): Due Dates, 234B/234C Interest, and Who Actually Needs to Pay

What you will learn

  • Advance tax ka rule simple hai: agar aapki estimated annual tax liability (TDS/TCS minus karne ke baad) Rs 10,000 ya usse zyada hai, to aapko tax saal ke dauran quarterly installments me pay karna hota hai — year-end par ek saath nahi. Ye rule salaried, freelancers, business owners, aur investors sab par apply hota hai.
  • Advance tax cumulative percentages me pay hota hai: 15 June tak 15% of annual liability; 15 September tak 45%; 15 December tak 75%; 15 March tak 100%. Ye cumulative hai — matlab September installment me June ka shortfall bhi cover karna hota hai.
  • Agar koi quarterly installment short ya late hai, to Section 234C ke under 1% per month simple interest lagta hai us shortfall par, typically 3 months ke liye per installment (March installment ke liye 1 month). Ye penalty nahi, interest hai — lekin avoidable cost hai.

Advance tax kya hai aur kise pay karna hai

Advance tax ka rule simple hai: agar aapki estimated annual tax liability (TDS/TCS minus karne ke baad) Rs 10,000 ya usse zyada hai, to aapko tax saal ke dauran quarterly installments me pay karna hota hai — year-end par ek saath nahi. Ye rule salaried, freelancers, business owners, aur investors sab par apply hota hai.

Pure salaried employees ke liye employer ka TDS usually poori liability cover kar deta hai, isliye unhe alag se advance tax nahi dena padta. Problem tab aati hai jab salary ke alawa income ho: freelance projects, bank FD interest, capital gains, ya rental income — in par TDS ya to hota nahi ya kam hota hai.

Due dates: 15-45-75-100 ka schedule

Advance tax cumulative percentages me pay hota hai: 15 June tak 15% of annual liability; 15 September tak 45%; 15 December tak 75%; 15 March tak 100%. Ye cumulative hai — matlab September installment me June ka shortfall bhi cover karna hota hai.

Presumptive taxation (Section 44AD/44ADA) wale small businesses aur professionals ke liye simplified rule hai: poora 100% ek installment me 15 March tak. Freelancers jo 44ADA use karte hain unke liye ye bada relief hai — quarterly tracking ki jagah ek annual payment.

Section 234C: installment miss karne ka interest

Agar koi quarterly installment short ya late hai, to Section 234C ke under 1% per month simple interest lagta hai us shortfall par, typically 3 months ke liye per installment (March installment ke liye 1 month). Ye penalty nahi, interest hai — lekin avoidable cost hai.

Relief: agar aapne 15 June tak 12% aur 15 September tak 36% pay kar diya hai to us installment ka 234C nahi lagta (minor shortfall tolerance). Capital gains jaisi unpredictable income ke liye bhi relief hai — gain hone ke baad ke installments me pay karo to pehle ke quarters ka interest nahi lagta.

Section 234B: year-end tak 90% na pahunchne ka interest

Section 234B alag hai: agar 31 March tak aapne assessed tax ka 90% se kam pay kiya (TDS + advance tax combined), to 1 April se payment date tak 1% per month interest lagta hai poore remaining balance par. Ye 234C se zyada mehenga pad sakta hai kyunki ye filing tak chalta rehta hai.

Example: total liability Rs 2,00,000, TDS sirf Rs 1,20,000 (60%), koi advance tax nahi. 90% threshold miss hua. Agar aap July me ITR ke saath Rs 80,000 pay karte ho to 4 months ka 234B interest = Rs 3,200 extra, plus 234C alag. Ye poora avoidable tha quarterly payments se.

Worked example: freelancer with Rs 15 lakh receipts

Priya freelance designer hai, FY 2026-27 me expected receipts Rs 15 lakh. Section 44ADA me 50% presumptive profit = Rs 7.5 lakh taxable. New regime me standard deduction ke bina (business income) uska estimated tax roughly Rs 65,000 banta hai. Clients ne 10% TDS kata Rs 1.5 lakh receipts par = Rs 15,000 TDS credit. Net advance tax liability: Rs 50,000 — Rs 10,000 threshold cross, advance tax due.

44ADA hone ki wajah se Priya poora Rs 50,000 15 March tak ek installment me pay kar sakti hai. Agar wo presumptive na hoti to schedule hota: Rs 7,500 (June), Rs 22,500 cumulative (Sept), Rs 37,500 (Dec), Rs 50,000 (March). TDS Calculator aur Income Tax Calculator se apna estimate quarterly refresh karo — receipts change hone par installments adjust karo.

Salaried + side income: hidden advance tax cases

Common trap 1: bank FD interest — TDS 10% kat-ta hai lekin agar aap 20-30% slab me ho to balance aapki responsibility hai. Rs 5 lakh ki FDs par Rs 35,000 interest = Rs 3,500 TDS, lekin 30% slab me actual tax Rs 10,500 — gap Rs 7,000. Trap 2: stocks/mutual fund capital gains — koi TDS nahi hota, poora tax aapko manage karna hai.

Fix easy hai: side income employer ko declare karo (Form 12BB me other income section) to employer TDS badha dega aur advance tax ka jhanjhat khatam. Ya khud quarterly advance tax pay karo. Rs 10,000 threshold yaad rakho — chhoti side income par tension nahi.

Payment kaise karein: 10-minute process

Advance tax online pay hota hai incometax.gov.in par: e-Pay Tax section → Challan (advance tax ke liye assessment year sahi select karo) → net banking/UPI/card se payment. Challan number aur BSR code save karo — ITR filing me ye credit match karne ke kaam aata hai.

Payment ke baad AIS/Form 26AS me entry reflect hone me kuch din lagte hain. March 15 deadline ke din server slow hote hain — 2-3 din pehle pay karna practical tip hai. Galat assessment year select karna common mistake hai jo refund/rectification me mahine kha jati hai.

Quarterly advance tax routine

Har quarter (June, September, December, March ke starting week me): (1) YTD income actual + remaining year projection banao; (2) Income Tax Calculator se annual tax estimate; (3) TDS credits (AIS se) minus karo; (4) balance ka cumulative % due date tak pay karo. Freelancers receipts spreadsheet quarterly update karein — estimate ke liye perfection nahi chahiye, reasonable accuracy kaafi hai.

Advance tax ka core idea simple hai: government ko tax income earn hone ke saath chahiye, saal ke baad nahi. Quarterly discipline se 234B/234C ka silent leakage band hota hai aur March me cash-flow shock nahi aata.
